Lets have a quick look at the very best locations for your compost site.

Flies and compost
The very best location for your compost pile is going to under a tyree where you will have partial shade to keep the pile from becoming too dry. This may sound simple, but there are a few tree types that are not ideal because they have a high acidic count which will adversely affect the composting.

The trees that should be avoided include:-

  • Pine
  • Juniper
  • Cypress
  • Black Walnut
  • Eucalyptus

You will definately benefit from having it close to the kitchen, but even more important is having it where you have good drainage.  Too much liquid and you’ll create problems for yourself and too little liquid and the composting won’t happen.

If you are able to have a bit of area around your compost pile to store additional leaves and  items to add at a later stage, it will make your composting much easier to control.

Now that you have assessed where the best location for your composter is, you’ll want to start looking at the various composters that are available and read up about what you should and should have in your compost recipe to prevent having to deal with problems such as poggy compost and critters.
